Women on the Water: Heather Swindler
"If you find something that you're interested in you just need to put yourself out there and do it. Don't worry about what other people say, do your research, be safe, and have a good time." Well said, Heather. Old Town's Women on the Water series aims to highlight members of our Pro Staff team inspiring more women to participate in on-water activities like kayak fishing, canoeing, and more. This week we're featuring tournament bass angler Heather Swindler.
How long have you been on the Old Town Pro Staff?
I have been on the Old Town team since November of 2019.
How did you get into kayak fishing, and how long have you been doing it?
I have been fishing my whole life from the bank and boats, both fresh and saltwater. I started kayak fishing in 2016 and competing in kayak tournaments in 2017. I got into kayak fishing through others who have a passion for the sport.
What is your favorite thing about kayak fishing?
There is never a bad day on the water, it is an opportunity for exercise and to share my passion with other anglers whether they are in a boat or on the bank. Plus a huge sense of accomplishment when I take things I learn and put them to use on the water. Either fishing for fun or a tournament, time on the water is therapeutic and uplifting.
What is your favorite species to target, and why?
My favorite species to target is largemouth bass. They are an apex predator that requires knowledge and persistence to find and bring the big ones into the kayak.
What’s your favorite part of competing in kayak fishing tournaments?
The competition and the comradery of this sport.
What is your kayak of choice and how have you customized it?
I currently fish out of an Old Town Sportsman Autopilot 120 in ember. I have added a Helix 7 fishfinder and sponsor decals but have yet felt the need to modify the boat. It is a perfect fishing vessel. I currently run 27dcm batteries for the drive and an AMPED Outdoors lithium battery for my fishfinder.
What is one place you haven’t fished that’s on your bucket list?
I have yet to take my AutoPilot 120 out on saltwater.
If you could give any advice to someone who is starting to kayak fish, what would it be?
Have a sense of humor and a lot of persistence. Time on the water is very important, like with all things, practice makes perfect.
What’s one goal or accomplishment you would like to achieve in 2021?
I would like to achieve a podium finish in a live event during 2021.
What do you think is special and unique about who you are and how you fish?
My willingness to share my experiences with others, I love to connect with anglers of all skill levels and help them achieve their goals on the water.
Do you have any advice for women looking to get into kayak fishing?
Don't be afraid to fail, absorb all the advice given and have fun.
