Women on the Water: Christi Holmes

What’s your name, where are you from, what do you do for a living and where do you currently live?

I’m Christi Holmes and I grew up in Machias, Maine. I currently live in Gray, Maine and work as a Design Engineer for a Civil Engineering firm.

How long have you been on the Old Town pro staff?

About one year.

How did you get into kayak fishing, and how long have you been doing it?

I grew up casually fishing from our family’s Old Town Egret kayak.

Fishing in Maine, do you have a preference between saltwater or freshwater?

I enjoy both but if I had to choose, I would choose freshwater.

What is your favorite species and why?

Brook trout will always hold a special place in my heart. Beautiful, tasty, and wild, Maine is home to the largest native brook trout population in the country.

What is your kayak of choice and how have you customized it?

I like the simplicity of the Sportsman Salty PDL and appreciate the fact that I can load and unload it myself easily.  I’ve added Go Pro mounts, trolling rod holders and a comfy place for my dog to sit.

Christi Holmes stands and casts a saltwater plug from a teal fishing kayak on a calm saltwater bay.

What is one place you haven’t fished that’s on your bucket list?

I’ve fished Iceland, Alaska, and many other places but next on my list is Montana.

If you could give any advice to someone who is starting to kayak fish what would it be?

Connect with other kayak anglers. It’s more fun and you’ll learn quickly from more experienced folks. Look on Facebook for a kayak fishing community in your area.

What’s one small or large goal/accomplishment you would like to conquer in 2021?

I want to spend a week canoeing the 98 mile Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

What do you think is special and unique about who you are and how you fish?

I love trying new things and dabble in every kind of fishing we have in Maine. Ice fishing, offshore fishing, fly fishing, trolling, jigging, etc.
