How to Properly Store a Sit On Top Kayak
This time of year marks the point at which many folks put the kayaks into storage for winter. Whether you're lucky enough to live in a place where you can paddle year-round or not, knowing how to store your kayak correctly can protect your investment. We make Ocean Kayaks out of durable polyethylene, which is a type of plastic. Although the kayaks are tough, improper storage for lengths of time can cause irreparable damage.
Sit On Top Kayak Storage Tips
- Store your kayak out of direct sunlight. UV damage can occur to the hull, seats, and more. If indoor storage isn't an option, find a shady spot outside.
- Support the hull. You can store your sit on top kayak deckside up or down, so long as it is adequately supported. If storing flat on the ground, always use moving blankets or foam padding to dampen the surface. Storing your kayak on its side in J-style racks is okay as long as the supports are padded and conform to the hull. Always keep the seat installed when storing your kayak on its side. If possible, keep your kayak off the ground on padded saw horses or a kayak rack with supports positioned roughly 30% in from the bow and stern. Also, never hang your sit-on-top kayak by the scuppers or handles, as this will damage the kayak.
- Look over your kayak for cracks, damaged parts, or missing hardware. You can order replacement parts on our website or by calling customer service. It is best to take care of it now rather than this spring!
- Open the drain plug to help vent the kayak and prevent condensation.
- Close and fasten all hatches
- Remove all scupper plugs (if you have them), and give them a good clean.
Malibu Pedal Kayak Storage Tips
- Leave the PDL drive thwart and seat installed to maintain proper lateral support
- Store the PDL drive indoors, keeping it dry and free of ice
- Look over the PDL drive, inspecting for damage and cleaning off any debris or vegetation. It's a great time to order a spare prop and prop pins ahead of next season.
- Check crank arm thread tightness and re-tighten if necessary. Note reverse threads on the left crank.
