DIY Kayak Duck Blind

Thanks to Jason Bryan for sending us this great how-to guide for building an affordable, easy-to-make kayak duck blind at home.

SUPPLIES

  • Polypropylene fencing
  • Zip ties
  • Raffia grass
  • Camo netting/burlap (optional)
  • Tin snips

Use tin snips to cut a piece of polypropylene fencing to the length of the kayak. Zip tie the fencing to the bow of the kayak through the handle. Trim an area in the center of the fencing for the cockpit. Leave the area closest to the bow still attached so it can be rolled up when paddling and unrolled when hunting for better concealment. Do the same with dry storage areas, rear hatch for decoys, etc. Then trim the outer edge of the fencing to the shape of the kayak.

You now have your frame, time to add some grass! Some raffia grass is available pre dyed or it can be easily dyed to fit your areas surroundings. A baby pool and a few colors of Rit fabric dye can make that possible. Just soak the raffia grass in the pool with dye for 20 minutes then let dry. Dark brown, olive green and tan are popular colors that work in most duck hunting environments. Mix several colors together and zip tie small bunches to the frame. Repeat this process until your frame is covered and your kayak disappears into the surroundings. Trim any grass that is below water level to reduce drag, or just roll the blind up and deploy it when you get to your spot. Good luck, be safe and have fun!

These plans will work on just about any kayak, we recommend the Old Town Sportsman Bigwater 132Topwater 120, or any of our sit on top fishing kayaks.
