2 Person Kayaks: Why You Want One
Everything’s better with a buddy, and that’s where the two-person kayak comes in. (You may also see it called a double kayak, or a tandem kayak. You probably won’t see it called a “friend ship,” which is a shame because that would be a great name for them.)
Fishing in a 2 Man Kayak
A kayak is a great platform for fishing.
- It’s quieter, and doesn’t disturb the water as much as a motorboat, meaning it doesn’t scare fish as much.
- It’s more economical
- It’s more convenient to cart around.
- You don’t pay for gas.
- You can reach more places in a kayak than a motorboat, because it’s smaller and more maneuverable.
- You get better efficiency paddling a kayak than a canoe.
Bringing a 2 person kayak just adds to the fun! It’s perfect for couples, friends, or taking your kid out on the water. Teaching your child to fish—and to love fishing—can be the start of a lifelong journey for them and endless memories for you.
One great kayak for fishing is the Malibu Two XL Angler. This kayak can hold 500 pounds, and can be paddled solo or tandem. (Not every 2 person kayak can be paddled solo.) It has four deck mounts, and two Scotty rod holders. The seats can be repositioned to sit back to back, face each other, or face the same direction. An easy-to-open center hatch can hold supplies, or fish. You’ve got everything you need to take to the water and show those fish who’s boss.
Touring in a 2 Person Kayak
Even if you’re just touring/exploring, it’s more fun to go with a friend. Besides, having someone help you paddle is always an added bonus.
A 2 person kayak like the Malibu Two is also a great way to help someone dip their toes into the water, literally and figuratively. If someone’s interested in kayaking but intimidated, you can be the person to introduce them to it! Just make sure that the more experienced paddler is in the back, and the person in the front can contribute whatever they can! (Or just enjoy the tour.)
If both kayakers are experienced, and find their rhythm paddling together, then the trip becomes a breeze. Two paddlers can stop a kayak almost instantly, and can paddle far more efficiently. And having your buddy there in the boat with you makes conversation a whole lot easier than if each person has their own boat.
2 Seater Kayak Romance
What could be more romantic than a lazy float down the river? There’s so much to be said for a tandem float. You get the thrill of accomplishing something together. You get quiet time and space to talk. (Just maybe don’t let your first date be a kayak date. A boat may not be the best place to learn that you’re not compatible with someone.)
Kayak Cost
It’s also worth considering the cost advantages of a 2 person kayak. You’re buying one boat instead of two. Even if you were buying the most affordable kayaks around, and one of them was child-sized, you’re still going to get a better deal on a two-person kayak.
Two is Better Than One (Sometimes)
Tandem kayaking is great. Whether you’re looking for efficiency, quiet time with a friend, or just a chance to introduce someone to kayaks, a 2 person kayak is a great way to get going. If you’re curious about choosing one for yourself, you might take a look at our 2 person kayak buying guide.
Whatever kayak you choose, and whatever you do with it, just have fun. It’s too beautiful out there not to go exploring.
